What is RCS keeps showing up in support threads because people think texting is one pipe. It is three, and the phone switches without a press conference. This week iPhone owners on iOS 26 are watching RCS sit on “Waiting for Activation,” or work on LTE and vanish the second the kitchen Wi-Fi grabs the device. Fido customers in Canada were hitting the same wall on August 14. The green bubble did not get dumber. The IP path did.

Three pipes

SMS is 1980s signaling. 160 characters, seven-bit soup, no receipts you can trust. It rides the voice network’s leftover. Cheap. Universal. Ugly.

MMS is the picture kludge. Group chats that spawn extra threads. Carrier size caps. That is why a photo to an Android used to look like a fax of a fax.

RCS is meant to replace that kludge with a real chat profile: typing indicators, read receipts, higher-res media, reactions, better groups. The GSMA, the mobile-operator trade group, publishes the Universal Profile. Operators plug it into IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem), the same family of gear that does VoLTE and often Wi-Fi calling. GSMA’s RCS page is the standards home, not a carrier blog.

If IMS is not registered, RCS does not start. The phone falls back to SMS/MMS and you only notice when the video is a postage stamp again.

What RCS actually is

RCS is not an app you download on iPhone. Apple wired it into Messages. On Android it is usually Google Messages talking to the carrier’s RCS or to Google’s Jibe hub, depending on the market.

Activation is a handshake: SIM/eSIM identity, carrier provisioning, sometimes a silent SMS, then an IMS registration. “Waiting for Activation” means that handshake never finished. Rebooting the phone does not provision the carrier’s RCS server. Pulling the SIM sometimes does. A VPN that captures all UDP can prevent it forever.

Not iMessage

Blue bubbles are iMessage. Apple IDs, Apple servers, Apple end-to-end encryption between Apple devices. Green used to mean “this left the garden.” After RCS, green can mean two different things: old SMS, or RCS to a non-Apple phone.

That is why a group chat with one Android still refuses to turn blue. iMessage does not federate. RCS does not make an Android into an iPhone. It only upgrades the non-Apple leg.

Features you lose when RCS drops: typing dots, proper receipts, original-size video, some reactions. Features you do not magically gain: iMessage apps, Memoji stickers as native iMessage payloads, Apple’s E2E story.

Why Wi-Fi kills it

RCS over Wi-Fi still has to reach the carrier’s IMS. That is not “the internet” in the Safari sense. It is a specific tunnel the phone brings up, often sharing guts with Wi-Fi calling.

Things that punch that tunnel:

  • VPN always-on. Multiple iOS 26 reports this week named the VPN first. Split-tunnel it or turn it off and wait a minute.
  • Private Wi-Fi Address rotating. iOS randomizes the MAC. Some routers and IMS sessions hate that. Apple’s own community thread on “RCS not working on Wi-Fi after updating” keeps landing on Fixed vs Rotating vs Off. Fixed is the usual fix, not a religion.
  • Limit IP Address Tracking / iCloud Private Relay on the cellular or Wi-Fi path. It can break carrier signaling that expected a clean source address.
  • Guest Wi-Fi / client isolation that blocks the ports IMS wants.
  • Dual SIM. RCS is per line. The wrong line is default. Data on SIM 1, RCS trying SIM 2.

If RCS works the moment you disable Wi-Fi, stop blaming the Android. The cellular IMS path is alive. The Wi-Fi path is not.

This week’s iOS 26 mess

August 2026 Apple Support Community threads are repetitive on purpose: update to iOS 26, RCS dies on Wi-Fi, works on cellular, Messages says waiting for activation, carrier chat says no outage, Apple chat says carrier, carrier says Apple. That ping-pong is what IMS bugs look like from the outside.

Canadian Fido iPhone users reported the same activation stall on August 14, across iOS versions, which points at the operator’s RCS/IMS backend as much as at a single firmware. When two OS generations fail the same way, it is not “update your phone.”

None of this means RCS is cancelled. It means the feature is only as healthy as the carrier’s IP telephony stack, and that stack is picky about home routers.

Encryption, briefly

Do not import iMessage’s privacy story onto RCS.

SMS is plaintext to anyone on the signaling path. Google Messages can do end-to-end encryption between two Google Messages clients when both have it on. Apple-to-Android RCS, as shipped through carriers, has not been the same E2E product as a blue bubble. Apple has said it wants the GSMA spec to carry E2E. Until your both-sides client shows a lock that both vendors document, assume a carrier can see RCS content the way they could see a rich chat on their own servers.

What to toggle

On iPhone: Settings → Apps → Messages → RCS, confirm it is on for the line you use. Toggle it off, wait, on. Airplane mode. Then Wi-Fi off and send an Android a photo. If that works, leave Wi-Fi off as a test, not a lifestyle.

Then: VPN off. Private Wi-Fi Address → Fixed on that SSID. Private Relay off for the test. Wi-Fi calling on or off as a pair (some people need it on for IMS over Wi-Fi; some routers only break when it is on). Reset network settings last, because it dumps Wi-Fi passwords.

On Android: Google Messages → RCS chats → confirm connected, not “setting up.” If it is setting up for a day, that is the carrier, not a cache.

If work MDM owns the phone, none of the above may apply. The profile can pin DNS or block IMS. That is an IT ticket, not a Reddit ritual.

Not a carrier outage dashboard. iOS builds and operator IMS configs change. If 911 or banking texts matter, confirm SMS fallback still sends before you start toggling radios.
