Gemini in Chrome Android is the search because the May preview was “select devices, late June” and the August post is “all Android users in the U.S.” People who never saw the icon are checking whether they were skipped. People who pay for Pro are checking whether the agent will book parking without a second confirmation. Those are two products in one blog headline.
Why the rollout matters now
May’s post promised end-of-June access on select U.S. devices. August’s post says all U.S. Android users for the assistant — which sends people back to check floors, Chrome version, and Google account sync. Auto browse language in August is still the paid SKU.
What shipped for everyone
Google’s list, not a leak:
- Summarize long articles on the current page.
- Answer questions about that page without jumping to a separate Gemini tab.
- Connect Google apps — Calendar and Keep are named in August; the May post also named Gmail for “finding specific information.”
- Nano Banana: generate or customize images inside Chrome (exam infographic, furnished apartment listing — Google’s examples).
Path: Chrome for Android → Gemini icon or ⋮ menu, top bar. May post: panel opens at the bottom of the display. If you hold Power for the system Gemini assistant, that is a different entry point. Do not confuse them.
Personal Intelligence (opt-in, tailored to hobbies/family) was in the May write-up. If you never opted in, do not expect it to know your dog’s name.
What Auto browse actually does
May examples: SpotHero parking from a ticket confirmation; change a Chewy order from puppy food to adult. August: book parking, update a recurring order, organize travel. Press write-ups add compare / reserve / schedule. The agent is supposed to show a plan before it starts. You can stop it.
That is not Chrome autofill (name, address, card). Autofill pastes. Auto browse clicks. Different attack surface. Google says it asks before “sensitive” tasks such as purchases or posting on social media. Read the plan. If the plan says “place order,” that is a payment. U.S. AI Pro / Ultra only on the August post. If you are on the free Gemini tier, the Sparkle in the toolbar is not a parking valet.
Android 12, 4GB, English (U.S.)
Google’s May footnotes, still the only public floors unless they republish them:
- Android 12 or higher.
- 4GB of RAM or more (Gemini in Chrome and auto browse).
- Device language English-US.

August’s “all Android users in the U.S.” is the cohort, not a repeal of 4GB. A 3GB Go edition phone can sit in the U.S. and never grow the icon. Update Chrome from Play. Reboot. If it is still missing, you are under a floor, not “Google hates your Pixel 4a.” Wi-Fi generation and eSIM vs physical SIM do not control whether the icon appears.
Prompt injection is the real footnote
Google’s own security paragraph: models trained to detect prompt injection — hidden instructions on a page that try to make the agent do something you did not ask. Auto browse is the feature that can act. A summary cannot drain a Chewy card. An agent that is allowed to click “update order” can.
Do not run auto browse on a random “free parking” page that showed up under an SMS. Do not paste a password into the Gemini panel. Chrome’s password manager and passkeys stay on-device rules; the agent is another process reading the DOM.

Not a passkey, not RCS
Gemini in Chrome is a Google account feature sitting on top of Chromium. It is not a new browser. It is not Android System WebView. It is not the Gemini app you already had in the app drawer. Logging into Chrome with a different Google account than the phone’s Gemini app is how people get “the icon is there but Calendar is empty.”
Turn it off if you do not want page text sent to Google’s models: Chrome settings → Google AI / Gemini (the label moves). Work profiles and fully managed devices may have the feature blocked by the admin. That is Intune, not a bug.
