Samsung spent Thursday night in Seoul selling a $699 phone as “flagship experience, focused on what matters most.” Read the spec table and the Galaxy S26 FE is last year’s Fan Edition with a newer processor, a newer skin, and a slower cable. That is still a useful phone for a lot of people. It is a poor upgrade if the one in your pocket is an S25 FE. Here is the buy sheet, not the keynote.

What Samsung announced Aug. 27
The Samsung Mobile Press brief (mirrored on the global Newsroom) is dated Aug. 27, 2026. Jay Kim, head of the mobile customer-experience office, called the Galaxy S26 FE the set of Galaxy S “signature strengths” people actually use: camera, battery, a big screen, and Galaxy AI. The Fan Edition has always been that pitch. This year the software is the headline because the hardware barely moved.
It is also the first S26-line phone to launch on One UI 9. The Ultra, Plus, and base S26 shipped earlier on last season’s software. If you care about Now Brief cards you write yourself, Circle to Search on more than one object, and My FanCam without waiting for an OTA, this is the S26 you can buy in September that already has the new skin.
Price, colors, and when it actually ships
SamMobile’s price post and the U.S. product page agree on the envelope:

The S25 FE opened at $649 for 128 GB. That is a $50 list hike on the same RAM and the same entry storage. Engadget and 9to5Google both point at RAM supply, not a camera leap, as the reason. 9to5Google also noted leftover S25 FE units still clearing near $500 at some carriers — the number that makes a $699 “new FE” look expensive if you just need a 6.7-inch Samsung.
Availability, per SamMobile’s carrier-day note:

The 45 W adapter is not in the box. Budget another $20–$40 if you do not already own a Samsung-rated 45 W brick. Official line: about 69% in 30 minutes with that brick; 15 W wireless; Wireless PowerShare if the battery is above 30%.

Exynos 2500: the one real hardware bump
Last year’s FE used the 4 nm Exynos 2400. This one uses the 3 nm Exynos 2500 that first showed up in the Galaxy Z Flip 7. SamMobile’s chip note: no dual-silicon strategy. U.S. buyers get Exynos, same as everyone else.
Samsung’s own deltas vs. the 2400, as reported in the S26 FE vs. S25 FE rundown:
- About 15–30% faster CPU (Samsung quotes 15% multi-core in one brief; the comparison piece uses ~30% CPU/GPU).
- GPU ray tracing about 28% up (AMD Xclipse 950).
- NPU about 39–40% up — that is the reason My FanCam and Horizontal Lock land here and not as a simple S25 FE software gift.
Core layout: 1× Cortex-X925 at 3.30 GHz, 2× A725 at 2.74 GHz, 5× A725 at 2.36 GHz, 2× A520 at 1.80 GHz. Ten cores. 8 GB of RAM is still the whole stack, including the $799 U.S. 256 GB model. If you keep Chrome, Maps, and a camera editor open at once, that 8 GB ceiling is the daily limit, not the CPU.
Samsung also claims about one extra hour of video playback from the same 4,900 mAh pack, and a 30-minute wired charge that hits 69% instead of last year’s 65%. Those are lab lines. Wait for independent drain tests before you buy on battery math.
Same cameras, new software
Sensor list is a copy-paste from the S25 FE: 50 MP 1/1.57-inch main, 12 MP ultrawide, 8 MP 3× tele, 12 MP front. Samsung widened the selfie field of view from 80° to 85°. That is the only optical change it is willing to print. Video still tops out at 8K30 on the main camera and 4K60 with EIS on all lenses.
What is new is the software that needs the 2500’s NPU:
- My FanCam — first on this year’s foldables. Shoot a wide clip, pick a person, the crop tracks them. Needs a Samsung account. Accuracy is not guaranteed; empty frames will not track.
- Super Steady with Horizontal Lock — keeps the horizon level even if you roll the phone. Samsung’s own S26 series already had this; the FE gets it now.
- Photo Assist — natural-language edits (day to night, add/restore objects). Watermark on saved AI output. Network + Samsung account.
- Gemini Omni — gallery stills and clips into a shareable video. Tied to the six-month Google AI Pro trial (then $19.99/month unless you cancel; offer ends Aug. 1, 2027, 11:59 p.m. PT, 18+).
- Audio Eraser and Document Scan / Multi Scan — noise cut in third-party apps, and a cleaner page scanner without a separate app.
Nightography is still a processing stack, not a new sensor. If you buy phones for a 5× tele or a 200 MP main, this is the wrong Samsung. You want an Ultra, or you wait.
One UI 9, Galaxy AI, seven years of updates
One UI 9 is the reason the Galaxy S26 FE exists as a 2026 product instead of a firmware bump. Now Brief lets you write custom cards (weather before you leave work is Samsung’s own example). Now Nudge can propose a Calendar event from an email date or a Maps pin from a restaurant text; at launch it talks to Samsung Messages plus a short third-party list (Google Messages, Google Chat, KakaoTalk, LINE, Signal, and a few carrier apps). Circle to Search with Google now accepts more than one circled object in a frame.
Support: seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates from the global launch date. Timing still varies by carrier. That clock is why an FE bought in 2026 can be a 2033 phone on paper. It is also why paying $699 for 128 GB and 8 GB of RAM is easier to swallow than paying $699 for a two-year update window.
Knox is on. Care+ has a new hub inside One UI 9. None of that is unique to the FE; it is the 2026 Galaxy software bundle at a lower sticker.
The USB 2.0 downgrade
This is the line most people will miss in the press PDF. The S25 FE used USB 3.2 Gen 1. The Galaxy S26 FE uses USB 2.0 on the same Type-C hole. Wired file copies of 4K/8K video and local backups will crawl. Wireless PowerShare and 45 W charging still work. The port did not get slower at charging; it got slower at data.
SamMobile’s comparison desk says that single cut is enough to kill an S25 FE → S26 FE upgrade. Agreed. If you offload camera cards to a PC every week, last year’s FE is the better cable. If you live in Google Photos and never touch a USB enclosure, you will not feel it.
Wi-Fi 6E instead of Wi-Fi 7 is the quieter omission. Fine for most apartments. Not the 2026 radio flex.
Who should buy, wait, or skip
Buy the Galaxy S26 FE if you are on an S23 FE, an A-series, or a four-year-old Android and you want a 6.7-inch 120 Hz panel, a real 3× telephoto, IP68, wireless charging, and seven years of patches without Ultra money. $699 is $350-ish under a current S26 Ultra 256 GB, which is the math Samsung wants you to do.
Skip the upgrade if you already hold an S25 FE. Same screen, same cameras, same 8 GB, slower USB, $50 more at list. One UI 9 will come to last year’s FE; My FanCam likely will not.
Price-shop the leftover S25 FE if a carrier still has it near $500 and you do not need FanCam. Same daily phone, cheaper.
Look at a discounted base Galaxy S26 before you tap buy. Engadget, writing Aug. 27, had the 256 GB S26 around $799.99 on sale — Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, 12 GB RAM, smaller 6.3-inch body. That is $100 over the FE’s 128 GB list for more RAM, more storage, and a different chip. Confirm the live Samsung or carrier tile; sale prices move.

A Fan Edition does not compete with a rumored $2,000 book phone. It does compete with a $700-ish iPhone if you already live in iMessage. Do not cross ecosystems on a Thursday night keynote feeling.

Buy checklist
- Do you already own an S25 FE? If yes, stop. Keep it. Charge the 45 W brick you already have.
- Need 512 GB? Import or pick another model. The U.S. Galaxy S26 FE tops out at 256 GB.
- Need fast USB dumps? Last year’s FE, or a phone that still ships USB 3.x. This one is 2.0.
- Need 12 GB of RAM or Snapdragon? Price the base S26. The FE is 8 GB Exynos everywhere.
- Carrier vs. unlocked. Sept. 3 is select carriers only. Sept. 4 is Samsung.com and retail. The U.S. page is still notify-me as of Friday.
- Budget the charger. 45 W brick not included. 69% in 30 minutes assumes that brick.
- Cancel the Google AI Pro trial on your calendar (six months, then $19.99/month) if you do not want 5 TB of Drive.
- Leaving iPhone? Test eSIM transfer with your carrier before you factory-reset. Smart Switch’s QR path does not override a carrier that still wants a physical SIM swap.
- Color is the only fun decision. Blueberry, Graphite, Pistachio. Graphite hides wear. Pistachio photographs. Blueberry is the one people will ask about.
The Galaxy S26 FE is a $699 Android with a 6.7-inch 120 Hz panel, a 3× camera, seven years of updates, and a new skin on day one. It is not a new camera. It is not a faster cable. Samsung announced it Aug. 27 because September is when Fan Editions sell, and because One UI 9 needed a slab that is not $1,200. If that is the phone you needed, the dates are Sept. 3 and Sept. 4. If it is not, the S25 FE in the clearance bin is still the more honest $500 Samsung.
