What Apple actually confirmed this week
Two pages, no rumor voice. Apple’s events hub now reads “Surprise and shine. Watch a special Apple Event on 9/9 at 10 a.m. PT.” That is apple.com/apple-events. Developer Relations posted the same stamp on Aug. 26: Surprise and shine — stream on apple.com, Apple TV, or YouTube Live.
Forbes’ Aug. 27 schedule recap fills in the room: Steve Jobs Theater, Cupertino, 1 p.m. Eastern / 6 p.m. U.K. John Ternus takes the CEO chair on Tuesday, Sept. 1; this is his first iPhone keynote. Tim Cook moves to executive chairman. Macs are already out of the way — Apple dropped Mac Studio with M5 Ultra and the 2 nm M6 Mac mini on Aug. 25. Our desk on that silicon is Apple M5 Ultra.
What Apple has not confirmed: product names, prices, storage floors, or a foldable at all. Everything below the livestream URL is reporting, not a spec sheet.
The two phones on the Sept. 9 stage
The rumor stack, led by Gurman and collected in MacRumors’ event timing note, is a three-phone fall drop that is really two product ideas:
- iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max — the slab. Same job as last year’s Pro: camera, battery, the phone you put in jeans. Expected on the same September cadence as always.
- The foldable — book-style, wider 4:3 inner screen. Gurman says people inside Apple call it iPhone Ultra. The rumor cycle still says iPhone Fold. Until Ternus says the word, treat both as placeholders.
The invite color is doing work. Gurman read sky blue as a new Pro finish and a “shining light” as the rumored mechanical aperture on the Pro Max. Forbes is less sold on the aperture-in-the-graphic claim and more sold on the blue. Either way, the standard iPhone 18 is not expected to share this invite. That cheaper phone is the spring 2027 problem.
Spec sheet: slab vs book
Until Sept. 9 these numbers are attributed rumor, not Apple copy. Display sizes come from the long-running foldable file MacRumors recapped in April’s iPhone Fold roundup and from Gurman’s August tester note. Chip claims sit on TSMC 2 nm, the same process story as the M6 Mac mini Apple already priced.

The inner 7.8 inches is the point of the foldable. That is iPad mini-adjacent, not Galaxy-tall. Testers Gurman talked to liked the hinge and the iPad-style app layouts when open; they used it as a viewfinder. That is the productivity pitch. The slab’s pitch is still “this is a phone.”
The price gap
Last year’s iPhone 17 Pro opened at $1,099 for 256 GB. That is the baseline. Memory costs and the June Apple hardware repricing are why the Pro conversation this year is a $100–$300 bump, not a free lunch. WSJ-class reporting in the Yahoo/Engadget roundup has the new Pro nearer $1,299. Treat $1,199–$1,399 as the band, not a quote.
Gurman’s line on the foldable is blunter: it will “cross the $2,000 threshold.” He did not say that $2,000 is the floor SKU. Higher storage could print past $2,500. Samsung’s Z Fold 8 opened at $1,899. Apple has never launched a phone in that neighborhood. The comparison is not Pro vs Pro Max. It is Pro vs a small tablet you fold.

Cameras: aperture vs no telephoto

Gurman’s Aug. 23 tester column is the closest thing to a hands-on: people like the hinge and the open layouts; the camera is the shrug. Dual rear lenses, 48 MP main plus ultra-wide, no telephoto. The Pro rumor is the opposite bet: a mechanical variable aperture on the main, smaller Dynamic Island, the usual triple array. That is still a photography phone. The foldable is a screen phone that also takes pictures. If your last three years of iPhone buying were about zoom and cinematic video, the book is the wrong object.
Face ID vs side-button Touch ID
Unfolded thickness around 4.5 mm is why TrueDepth may not fit. The workaround in the rumor file is Touch ID in the side button — the iPad Air / MacBook move, not an in-display fingerprint under the crease. Some people will prefer it. Forbes’ timetable — if Apple keeps the usual week-after-keynote dance — is pre-orders Saturday, Sept. 12 (skipping Friday the 11th, the 25th anniversary of 9/11) and stores Friday, Sept. 18. Those dates are pattern, not a Newsroom URL. iOS 27 for older phones is expected the week of the 14th.
The foldable is the constraint. MacRumors’ event piece flags limited early production and a possible U.S.-first window. Gurman has said it should go on sale around the same time as the Pro models or soon after. “Soon after” is how Apple talks when the hinge yield is still a factory problem. Do not plan a Tuesday pickup for a foldable the way you plan a Pro Max 256 GB in orange.
On-device AI is the other shared spec: A20-class silicon, Apple Intelligence, Siri AI waitlists that already apply to iPhone 15 Pro and up. Spring 2027 leftovers
